In 2005, nine tenths of European universities participated in ERASMUS University Cooperation scheme.

Erasmus started almost 20 years ago and this year the cooperation reached an impressive 87% of more than 4000 universities in the 25 EU member states plus Iceland, Norway, Bulgaria, Romania, Turkey and Lichtenstein.

The purpose of Erasmus is to promote student and teaching staff mobility and to support trans-national cooperation between universities. In 2003-2004 150 000 Europeans benefited from the program.
