The role of the Music Fund is to promote Icelandic music and support the dissemination of Icelandic musicians and their music.

Professional musicians and those connected to music projects.
The Music Fund funds various music projects and concerts across the country. Projects can be for individuals, co-operation projects, musical groups, festivals and various other concerts. Projects can be general music activities as well as dissemination and marketing activities for music and professional musicians. Projects are usually funded for a year. The grants cannot be applied for organisational costs. When applying for the fund a real cost is stated and other funding has to be put into the application. If one applies for a concert, a programme should be enclosed along with the location of the concert and dates.
The application procedure is online through the Rannís application portal. Grants are awarded to designated projects which run no longer than one year.
The applicant must clearly explain the description of the participants of the project, their budget plan, and CVs, if appropriate, both professional, and artistic. In the activity plan, applicants should include information on all practices, music events, travel and venues. The time plan should fit the activity plan. If the applicant has received a grant before from the Music Fund, a new application is not valid unless the final/interim report has been sent to Rannís.

The Minister of Education, Culture and Science appoints three board members to the Music Fund for up to three years. The board makes recommendations for allocations to the Minister who has the power to make the final decision.
