Parliament - defines the annual budget to professional performing art groups, with the objective to support Icelandic performing art in general, and to improve the conditions of performing art activities. This funding can be awarded to general, performing art activities, children‘s theatres, puppet theatre, operas, dance etc.

All proposals are to be submitted through the Rannis electronic submission system. The applicants must submit a list of participants, a description of the project, a budget, and an activity plan.
The performing art applicant who also plans to apply for an artist salary for his participants can do so by marking the box “this application is also valid for artist' salary fund” and the application will be duplicated into the artist salary fund for performance, with two application numbers.
The budget should represent the real cost of the project and other funding should be stated.
Attachments: Supporting attachments should be uploaded with the online application. Supporting documents could be (but are not restricted to) CVs (NB all CVs should be in one document), scripts, certificates, and any other documents deemed to be relevant to the project.
Grants are given to professional performing art groups for one-year projects. Framework agreements can be made for projects for up to two-year period.
The Minister of Education, Culture and Science, can make a temporary agreement with a professional theatre group, and a community body about funding several projects. The co-budget from the community needs to reach 50%.
The performing art board, which is appointed by the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science evaluates and selects the projects which to support and the Minister then approves the final list. When the selection is approved, applicants will receive answers by email, a news release will be sent to the media and the list will be published on the Rannís website. The selection result is usually published in January.
According to Article 21 of the Administrative Procedures Act No. 37/1993 public authorities do not have an obligation to give reasons for grant decisions in the field of culture.
The revised final report has to be sent in to the board within 6 months of the project‘s finalisation.
The Minister of Education, Culture and Science appoints three board members for 3 years at a time. The bord allocates annual grants from the Performing Art Fund according to Article 16 of the Performing Art Act No. 165/2019. The government decides the budget for this action annually.
