Universities, institutions and companies that apply for grants to internation research funds can apply for Preparatory grants. Priority is given to applications submitted to Horizon Europe, The EU Research and Innovation Programme 2021-2027 and to jointly funded Nordic calls, such as NordForsk.
Grants are only paid to bank accounts of Icelandic institutions and legal entities and the applicant must hold a position at the accounting institution designated in the application.
Purpose
To support Icelandic legal entities in preparing for participation in applications to international funds and partnership programs, in which Iceland is a member.
Application deadline
The online application system for Preparatory grants is open 12 months a year, from November 1st to October 31st.

The Boards
of The Icelandic Research Fund and The Icelandic Technology Fund provide the
funding for Preparatory grants.
It is possible to apply for only a Travel grant or only a Preparatory grant, or both a Preparatory grant and a Travel grant.
Eligible to apply are Icelandic individuals or entities specified as participants and/or coordinator on a grant application, which has been submitted to an international fund or partnership. In the case of more than one Icelandic participant in a project, the participant who is the main contact person with the project coordinator shall submit the Preparatory grant application.
Preparatory grant applications shall be submitted after a grant application has been submitted to an international fund or partnership.
All applications shall be submitted through the funds online submission system.
A copy of the application and confirmation of submission to an international fund or partnership must accompany the Preparatory application.
No single institution can be allocated more than 10% of the fund´s total allocation capital. Schools within larger institutions, such as the University of Iceland, are defined as institutions. If the total amount applied of submitted applications exceed the fund´s capital, the distribution of grants between institutions is taken into account.
