On May 4, 2008, 100 years had passed since the birth of librarian Haraldur Sigurðsson, but he died in 1995. On that day, his widow, dress designer Sigrún Ástrós Sigurðardóttir, announced that in accordance with the couple's will from 1983, the Sigrún Ástrós Sigurðardóttir and Haraldur Sigurðsson Research Fund had been established.
Haraldur Sigurðsson worked as a librarian at the National Library of Iceland for more than 30 years. He also did extensive scholarly work, was an active translator and publisher and devoted himself to social issues, but Haraldur is best known for his work on Map History of Iceland (Kortasaga Íslands).
