Factors hampering innovation activities in Iceland

The Icelandic Research Centre (RANNIS) has conducted the 4th Community Innovation Survey (CIS 4) in Iceland, concerning business innovation activities for the period of 2002-2004. The fourth Community Innovation Survey (CIS4) is conducted in every EU member states under the guidance of Eurostat. The survey is the main statistical instrument for data collection on business innovation, focusing of issues such as: innovation expenditure, its financial results, innovation effects, source of information, main obstacles and public financial support.

The survey is the main statistical instrument for data collection on business innovation, focusing of issues such as: innovation expenditure, its financial results, innovation effects, source of information, main obstacles and public financial support.

The financial factors were cited as main obstacles of innovation activities by innovation active enterprises: lack of funds within the enterprise or group (20,5%), innovation cost to high (19,1%), lack of finance from sources outside the enterprise (16,5%). Non innovation enterprises cited: innovation cost to high (9,8%), uncertain demand for innovation goods or services (6,7%), difficulty in finding cooperative partners for innovation (5,2%) and lack of funds within the enterprise or group (5,2%). As the figure reveals there is a considerable difference between innovation active and non active enterprises.
